Migration Factory - Part 7 - WxC-MT transformation migration (early preview)

In the near future (@CLUS23) Wrangler_ will support Webex Calling Multi Tenant (WxC-MT) in addition to Webex Calling Dedicated Instance (WxC-DI), this new migration path streamlines the complex task of converting data from disparate systems. The Migration process specifically caters to the intricate nature of configurations in the Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) platform.

One of the challenges it addresses is determining which source of numbers configuration to use, given that CUCM offers many ways of configuring and utilizing numbers. Furthermore, ascertaining and verifying the primary line for WxC requires careful consideration, from the user's primary line in CUCM to devices' configurations.

CUCM multiple number configuration possiblities

To handle these complexities, Wrangler employs a strategic approach. It first leverages the CUCM user's primary line, if present. Then it moves onto devices with ownerId, Extension Mobility (EM) profiles associated with the user, and Remote Destination Profile (RDP) connected to the user. If discrepancies arise, Wrangler selects the most common value, maintaining consistency and accuracy.

Line normalization is another crucial aspect. wrangler_ systematically converts lines to the E.164 format using the device's external mask, line E.164 alternate, or user telephone number.

wrangler_’s capabilities extend to integrating data from various related configurations. Initially, it pulls information from User/Line/Device Configuration. As development progresses, wrangler_ will enrich data from Call Routing Information, ensuring a comprehensive data transformation.

How to group CUCM configuration and map to WxC

Creating sites is simplified with wrangler_’s automated “site suggestions” feature. It groups source objects into a site using device pools or other CUCM configurations. These wrangler_ sites can then be mapped to WxC locations, further facilitating the migration process.

In terms of user conversion, wrangler_ focuses only on source users that have telephony configuration, ignoring CUCM LDAP synchronised end users with no configuration. This tool recognizes that email is the primary key in WxC and ensures a seamless conversion of CUCM users to WxC People.

wrangler_ also handles the conversion of multiple source devices to WxC Person. It transforms soft clients, extension mobility, and single number reach into the WxC-MT person. CUCM-PHONE, for instance, transforms into WxC-MT-PERSON Application Services, while CUCM-EM and CUCM-RDP transforms into WxC-MT-PERSON Hoteling/Hot Desk and WxC-MT-PERSON Simultaneous Ring, respectively.

Multiple devices in the source Jabber(CSF/BOT/TAB/TCT), CIPC, Extension Mobility (EM/UDP) and Single Number Reach (SRN/RDP/RD) all convert to WxC Person

Roadmap

Drop 1: Base Features - June 2023

This release focuses on the migration of base users and devices:

  • Base validation rules: Validation rules are implemented to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the migrated data.

  • Primary number determination and consolidation: The primary phone number for each user is determined and consolidated during the migration process.

  • Base WxC-MT object support: Basic WxC-MT objects, such as organizations, locations, and numbers (local gateway), are supported in this drop.

  • Licensing: The licensing information for users and devices is migrated to WxC-MT.

  • Role: User roles and permissions are transferred to the new platform.

  • People: User profiles and associated information are migrated.

  • Device: Device configurations and settings are migrated.

  • Workspace: Migration of general workspace configurations is included.

Drop 2: Initial Services - Q3CY23

The second drop of Wrangler WxC-MT introduces initial services and advanced mappings to further simplify the migration process. Here are the key highlights:

  • Advanced Mappings: These include Class Of Service Mappings and Site Mappings, providing a greater level of detail and control in the migration process.

  • Additional Objects: Wrangler now supports the migration of more complex features such as Virtual Lines, Pickup, Park (group & extension), Virtual Extension, and Location. This drop also enables location for Cloud Connected PSTN.

  • Unsupported Device Replacement: Wrangler provides a mechanism to replace unsupported devices during the migration process.

  • Wrangler_ Bulk Change: This feature allows for large-scale changes to be made with ease.

  • Soft Key Layout (Location/specific device) Template: This provides a mechanism to customize the soft key layout based on location or specific devices.

Drop 3: Final Services - Q4CY23

The third drop of Wrangler_ WxC-MT focuses on final services, offering even more features and enhancements:

  • Additional Objects: Wrangler now supports the migration of Voicemail, Queuing, Auto Attendants, Music on Hold, and Hunt Group configurations.

  • Redundant Configuration Prune (CDR): This feature helps to streamline the system by removing unnecessary redundant configurations.

  • Phased Migration Enhancements: These enhancements allow for a smoother and more efficient phased migration process.

  • WxC-MT Dial Plan Support + DI integration: Wrangler now supports the migration of dial plans to WxC-MT and provides integration with DI.

  • WxC Org Validation Report: Wrangler generates a validation report for the WxC organization, ensuring all configurations and settings are ready for the migration.
